Day 1 | June 22, 2025
After clearing customs, you’ll be greeted by a Transcend Cruises representative and transferred to the NH Collection Prague Carlo IV Hotel. This afternoon, guests have the option to participate in an included architectural tour of the city of Prague. Prague enjoyed a golden age in the 14th century under the rule of Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, and many of the buildings in the UNESCO-designated city core date to that era.
Prague Castle dates back even earlier. Construction on the oldest parts of the complex began in the 9th century. A drive across the Vltava River (you might know the Vltava as the Moldau, the namesake of the beautiful tone poem by beloved Czech composer Bedřich Smetana) brings you to the sprawling complex of towers, halls, cathedrals, courtyards, and houses, where kings, emperors, and presidents have had their offices for almost a millennium. Step down from the motorcoach and walk inside the castle’s protective walls, taking in the Gothic structure of St. Vitus Cathedral, which took 600 years to build, and Vladislav Hall, whose intricate stone-vaulting system was one of the most advanced engineering feats of the late Middle Ages.
After visiting St. Vitus Cathedral and the Old Royal Palace, continue your guided walk through the picturesque Lesser Quarter to Charles Bridge, one of the city’s most famous landmarks. The walking tour will end in Old Town Square, which is surrounded by majestic buildings, including the Church of Our Lady before Týn and Prague’s City Hall, which boasts a famous medieval astronomical clock.
This evening at the hotel for a festive welcome reception and welcome talk from Dr. Alexandra Richie, our Featured Guest Speaker during this program. Following, enjoy dinner and the remainder of your evening on your own.
Day 2 | June 23, 2025
Following breakfast, we take a one-hour drive to Theresienstadt or ‘Terezin’. This was a ‘model camp’ built by the Nazis to house so-called ‘prominent’ Jews. It was also meant to fool the world that conditions in the Nazi camp system were humane. When it suited them, the Nazis permitted cultural life so that artists, composers, and performers could give lectures and concerts; musicians included Viktor Ullmann, Pavel Haas, and Gideon Klein. But it was all a sham. When they had served their purpose, the inmates would be sent to camps such as Auschwitz. Over 35,000 people died in the camp itself, and over 88,000 were murdered elsewhere. It remains a symbol of the utter cynicism of the Nazi regime and the depths to which they were prepared to go to deceive the world. This evening, we enjoy a private reception and Michelin-star dinner together.
Day 3 | June 24, 2025
This morning, we visit Prague’s Jewish Quarter. Known as Josefov, this is a beautifully preserved part of the city, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The Jews settled in Prague in the 9th century, creating a rich and vibrant culture; the Old New Synagogue, built in the 12th century, is the oldest functioning synagogue in Europe. We will visit the Pinkus Synagogue, which has a moving memorial to the victims of Shoah, and the next-door cemetery, which was used between the 15th and 18th centuries. Prague was home to a thriving Jewish community until the tragedy of the Holocaust, but figures ranging from Franz Kafka to Madeleine Albright remind us of the extraordinary legacy of the Jewish community of Prague. Following lunch near the quarter, we bid farewell to the beautiful city of Prague and transferred by coach to the iconic city of Munich. Following check-in at the gorgeous Le Meridien Hotel Munich, we gather this evening with the remainder of our guests aboard this extraordinary journey for a Welcome Reception and introductory talk from our featured speakers.
